Good health and working out are part of living well. Eating right fuels our active lifestyle, and living the outdoor life goes hand in hand with using the right equipment. The Food for the Ages team is outside in the elements every day burning off calories and having fun doing it. But with the extreme weather we can get up here at 9,000 feet, the fun can wear off in a hurry if we don’t have the right gear on, our waterproof and warm Columbia Hiking boots, for example. Who knew that April 30th it would be a Columbia Boots vs. Rocky Mountain Spring Snow challenge day?
Though tomorrow is May 1st, it snowed six inches last night, giving John the chance to try out his new all-weather hiking boots. And what better excuse to trudge through a couple miles of fresh snow than to celebrate the NFL Draft with fellow rabid Bronco fans at the base of Mary Jane Ski Area?
After a hearty breakfast — a Denver Omelet with egg whites seemed appropriate — we struck out from our little condo at the base of Winter Park (which closed last weekend but The Jane still is open), and had some fun with the Bronco cheerleaders, former QB Jake Plummer and Miles the Mascot as the crowd greeted Connor McGovern to the team in Round 5. We couldn’t have done it without some good food to fuel us through the snow, and John’s new boots (decidedly taller than the low-top Salomon trail runners he’s been wearing all winter).
John always bought the best hiking boots, you know, the old-school leather that required painstaking annual maintenance–boots in the oven, Sno-Seal on the stove and a very messy toothbrush at the end. With today’s new-school breathable/waterproof materials and manufacturing techniques Columbia takes it to a new level. The Columbia Men’s Snowblade Waterproof Boot that John picked up on sale at the Winter Park Columbia Store were only $59, a far lower price than he used to pay for top-performing leather boots back in the ’70s.
